The author and playwright Peter Turrini on Dominique Doujenis' work
What interested my theatrical mind all life long was the relationship between naturalness and artificiality, between finding and inventing. In former times I had the tendency to place faction before fiction, now I feel obliged to the latter. When a story has its anchor in reality, I allow myself more and more the free flight of thoughts.
All my life, my theatrical mind has been fascinated with the relationship between naturalness and artificiality, between finding and inventing. There was a time in which I had the tendency to place fact before fiction. Now I feel obliged to reverse that process. When a story has its anchor in reality, more and more I allow myself to let my thoughts flow freely.
I saw in Dominique Doujenis' paintings a very successful relationship between fact and fiction. Fact, nature, came towards me in forms that I especially like: water, light, sun and sand. I´ve lived more than a year in Greece and belong to the big sun lovers of this world. Dominique Doujenis has her biological roots in Greece. She literally found those archetypal elements of nature in front of her. But what did she do with them? She converted them, always starting with the reality in front of her and beneath her feet, into currents, into an apparently easy game. She mixed the elements, erased the rules of gravity, and gave nature a new and different appearance.
If you leave the form of nature and begin to play with it, something unpredictable and irritating starts happening. Does the female body in the paintings give itself playfully and unconsciously to the movement, to the currents of the water, or is it an expression of feeling torn and tortured? Someone who dares to go from fact to fiction arrives in a world of exciting possibilities: what supports us, breaks into pieces; what ties us together, tears us apart; what makes us float, pulls us under.
An interesting paradox of art is that a painter like Dominique Doujenis, who goes very far with her fantasies and with transformation, succeeds in landing in our reality. This takes courage and ability for which I have a tremendous amount of artistic respect.
